RIVERTON, WY

Downtown Riverton
Library

At the beginning of March I moved to an area of the country I had only driven through before. I moved to Riverton, WY. If you Google Riverton you can find out some facts about it. I’m simply going to give some impressions I have made.

Indian and Mountain Man

The town itself is nice. The people are friendly. Everyone I’ve come into contact with have wanted to be of help. As a community of just over 10,000 it has limited shopping and restaurants. There is no shopping mall but plenty of strip malls. Walmart & Kmart are here along with stand-alone stores offering just about anything. To get the big chain stores people drive to Casper, Denver, Salt Lake, Billings, etc.  There are parks to picnic and play in, movie theaters, a college, library and festivals at various times of the year. A nice place.

It is not at all uncommon to see deer and antelope. I was sitting in my living room last night and something caught my eye in the front yard. Twelve mule deer walked between my house and the neighbor heading to who knows where. I imagine to people around here that  would not seem all that unusual. Well to me it was. I just stood in the window smiling and watching the beautiful sight. Horses and cows graze together on the edge of town. Snow capped mountains are visible in the distance. Riverton is nestled in a beautiful location.

It is a conservative community which means that there are no agencies to help strangers to the community who are in need of gas money, food, etc. People take care of their own.  Churches have banded together to offer limited help to those I mentioned.

All in all it is a nice place to be. It reminds me of life in Minnesota where I grew up, complete with snow. Spring has sprung now and the warm breezes, green grass and marigolds are slowly replacing the cold and brown.

Two weeks from now Cindy will have joined me and we will be setting up our new home. Come and visit but call ahead.

EASTER 2012

A Blessed Easter to all you people of faith.

It was a meaningful Holy Week once again. The sanctuary was decorated appropriately for the day, scripture was read and the words of grace were proclaimed.

At the end of Maundy Thursday worship (Maundy means “new command” and refers to the words of Jesus when He told his followers  “A new command I give you – love one another”) the sanctuary was stripped bare of altar cloths, Bibles, banners, everything. I know Lutheran churches do this as part of our practice. Not all churches recognize and worship on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday of Holy Week.  While Psalm 88 was being chanted people from the congregation came forward and aided the stripping of the sanctuary.  It is a nice practice. In this case worship becomes more participatory rather than a spectator sport.

Good Friday found the sanctuary covered in black cloth. A large wooden cross was leaning against the altar. A crown of thorns lay upon the altar. Since we worshipped by using a Tenebrae worship liturgy (tenebrae means “darkness” ) after a short reading from the gospel of John about the crucifixion a candle was extinquished leaving the sanctuary just a bit darker. Finally at the end of worship the sanctuary was dark with one candle burning. That candle was taken from the sanctuary leaving the worshippers in darkness.  A loud noise representing the rolling of the stone in front of the tomb of Jesus was heard then the candle is brought back into the sanctuary. People sit and pray and meditate in quiet and then leave when they are ready to.

Easter Sunday starts a bit differently than I have experienced before. Remember how people from the congregation aided in stripping our worship space at the end of Maundy Thursday. Well the sanctuary on Easter Sunday morning is just how it was left on Good Friday – bare and covered in black. As part of the worship Easter Sunday people from the congregation are asked to prepare the worship space for the resurrection. So in semi darkness young and old alike bring in banners, Easter lilies, communion vessels, Bibles, everything used to  aid our worship. Then when all is in readiness the lights are turned on,  people stand  and the words “He is risen” are shouted out and the congregation shouts back “He is risen indeed”.  Then we sing “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today”. It is a meaningful and joyous way to begin worship.

The rest of the morning included a breakfast put on by the men of the congregation, an Easter egg hunt and another worship service. It gets to be a full morning.

St. John LC averages 65 in worship normally. There are 187 baptized members according to our records. Easter worship though finds maybe twice that many people here. It is a great family gathering.
I’m going to end with the words of this benediction or blessing which we heard Easter Sunday.

May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another,
in accordance with Christ Jesus.
Amen.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

And may the God of all grace + bless you now and forever.
Amen.

HOLY WEEK

Grace and peace be unto you all.

A blessed Holy Week to you all. Now I realize that you all do not share the same beliefs. Some of you come from traditions that observe Holy Week with worship on Maunday Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. Others of you come from traditions that do not observe Thursday and Friday but simply focus on Easter. Then there are your personal traditions and practices.

Some will worship, some will go out to Brunch without worshiping. Some will chase the Easter bunny and tell the kids that the true meaning of Easter is love without mentioning God.

Now having said all that I simply want to point you to a web page where the author muses about the question people both in and out of the church have asked. Why do we call Good Friday good?

Read it and then watch the animations at the end which are well done.

Easter Sunday will include 2 worship services, an Easter Breakfast put on by the men's group and an egg hunt. After all of that I'm driving down to Littleton, CO (6.5 hour's away) to be with Laura's family for a short visit. I'll get to play grandpa a bit but mostly I'm going to see about repairing the blown over fence in their backyard.

What is nice about living here in Riverton is that I CAN drive down to Littleton if I want. Las Cruces was 10.5 hours away.

Well whatever your tradition may you have a Blessed Holy week and celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from death to life. God loves you.

Shalom.
